The Philippine National Police (PNP) reported Friday that the New Year celebration was generally peaceful in the country except for at least two cases of indiscriminate firing of firearms, one of which involved a policewoman.
PNP spokesperson Police Brig. Gen. ldebrandi Usana said a policewoman in Malabon was arrested for indiscriminate firing, while in Dagupan a person was hit by a stray bullet.
“Pangkalahatan naging matahimik naman, wala pong masyadong naitala na kahit na anong untoward incident in relation sa celebration ng New Year,” Usana said.
Usana said that firecracker-related incidents were “not as many as those reported in the past years.’’
Usana said the policewoman involved in the indiscriminate firing will likely be dismissed from the service.
He said the person who was hit by a stray bullet in one of his legs in Dagupan is now recuperating at home after seeking medical treatment.
Police operatives are now conducting a probe to determine where the bullet came from.
Usana explained that the slug will be subjected to forensic examination to find out if gunshot came from a registered firearm. (Chito A. Chavez)
