International chess master Angelo Young was voted as one of “10 Most Outstanding Alumni” for 2026 of the Eulogio Rodriguez Jr. High School.
Young, who graduated in 1980, rose to prominence by winning the Philippine national junior championship in 1982 and making history by achieving his international master title in a record 21 days.
A highly-rated international player, Young also made the country proud by finishing in a tie for fifth place out of 138 participants in the 2019 World Seniors Chess Championshipsin Bucharest, Romania.
He was also a former winner of the Chicago Open and two-time MVP for the Chicago Blaze in the United States Chess League.
As a coach, he handled the Emilio Aguinaldo College chess program in the NCAA and founder of the Young Chess Academy in the Philippines.
The 63-year-old Young was also inducted into the ERJHS Alumni Sports Club Hall of Fame in 2016, along with several other outstanding alumni who excelled in sports.
Aside from Young, the other outstanding alumni of ERJHS for 2026 are Elmer Hernandez of Batch 65 (government service/engineering); Patria Cabatuando-Rivera of Batch 66 (arts and literature); Atty. Moises Samson (government service/law); Joselito Caleon of Batch 73 (architecture/photography); Dr. Esperanza Oblena-Cayanan of Batch 75 (government service/science); Maria,Teresa Vallester-Montalbo of Batch77 (public service); Dante Sauquillo of Batch 82 (education/science); Dr. John Winston Gonzales of Batch 84 (medicine/psychology); and Lorenzo Lorenzo of Batch 87 (education/business management).
ERJHS Alumni Association president Ramon Ferreros said the awarding ceremony for the “10 Most Outstanding Alumni” will be held on Saturday, February 28 as part of the 74th Founding Anniversary of the ERJHS located at Mayon Ave. Quezon City.
