Police launched an investigation into a strong explosion that rocked a residential area in Barangay 227, Zone 21, Tondo, Manila, just minutes after the New Year countdown on Thursday, January 1.
The blast was heard at around 12:10 a.m., startling residents who were still welcoming the New Year.
At least three houses were affected and temporarily lost electricity.
Several properties were also damaged, including a tricycle, a motorcycle, and house windows.
Barangay authorities said around five families were impacted by the explosion.
No injuries were reported. However, a man who owns one of the affected houses was taken to a hospital after reportedly experiencing trauma from the incident. Officials noted that the man could not be properly interviewed at the time as he was allegedly intoxicated.
The barangay warned that anyone found responsible for the explosion will be held accountable.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine what type of firework caused the blast.
Barangay officials added that the incident was similar to a previous explosion in nearby Barangay 223, which involved a firework allegedly picked up by children. (Hannah Nicol)
