Jonathan Reyes produced some unbelievable shots to lead Kayod Pilipinas to a two-gold romp in the 9th Southeast Asian Squash Championships in Bangkok, Thailand Wednesday, July 23.
Reyes, 19, teamed up pretty well with Christopher Buraga and the duo carved out an 11-1,11-9 win over Malaysians Ethan Kuan and Yuan Xin to capture the U21 men’s jumbo doubles crown.
They marched into the finals after toppling Malaysia’s SWK Harith Danial and Muhammad Razi, 11-10, 11-4.
Reyes also triumphed in the U21 mixed jumbo double category where he joined forces with the 16-year-old Aerra Relano in posting 11-8, 8-11, 11-7 win over Malaysian Danial and Anne Goh.
Reyes’ golden double performance made up for the stinging defeat of Jemyca Aribado in the women’s singles finals to Singapore’s Wai Yhann Au Yeong, 6-11, 7-11, 11-13.
Still, Aribado was delighted with her performance as she managed to get back at last year’s titlist Malaysian Ainaa Amani, who she beat 9-0 (ret.) in the semis. She also bettered her bronze medal finish last year.
In the men’s singles division, Reymark Begornia took home bronze – his back-to-back medal for two straight editions – after yielding to Malaysian Duncan Lee, 9–11, 7–11, 9–11, in the semis.
In all, the Nationals copped two gold, one silver and one bronze medals.
