Grandmaster Wesley So ruled the inaugural Chess.com Global Championship, beating GM Nihal Sari with two games to spare in Toronto, Canada Monday, Nov. 7 (Tuesday in Manila).

The Cavite-born So beat the Indian sensation, 4.5-1.5, to pocket the $200,000 cash purse (roughly P11.7 million) in the $1.1 million tournament.

The victory somehow put So’s failed title bid in the 2022 US Open behind, as well as in the Grand Chess Tour and the Fischer Random world chess championship.

Prior to the win, So had beaten Denis Lazavik, Vasyl Ivanchuk, Jeffery Xiong, Dmitry Andreikin and Hikaru Nakamura.

Up next for So is the $1.6 million 2022 Meltwater Champions Chess Tour in San Francisco, California.
