The Philippine men’s lacrosse team stamped its class right away with a 20-1 demolition of China in the opener of the 2026 Asia-Pacific Men’s Lacrosse Championship in Wellington, New Zealand Tuesday, Jan. 6.
With a ticket for the 2027 World Lacrosse Men’s Championship at stake, the Nationals didn’t hesitate, dominating both ends to win pulling away.
With its win, the Philippines topped Group B and will face Hongkong, which was still reeling from a 20-5 loss to Japan, this Wednesday, Jan. 7. China, on the other hand, faces Japan on the same day.
Spearheading the onslaught for the Nationals was Nicholas Marsh who delivered five goals, while Jayden Basalatan, Christian Tacogue, and Benjamin Bisquera added three points apiece.
“It went great, it’s my first time being on the team. It’s just awesome to go out and compete, and I’m really excited for the future of this team in our games,” said Marsh.
“I’m looking forward to the big games, playing Japan, the playoffs, and the medal games,” he added.
Also contributing for the Nationals were Nicholas Mitchell (2), Jonathan Dugenio (2), Chase Ladrido (1), and Benjamin Palli (1), who also recorded two assists, while Haonan Chen was the lone scorer for the Chinese.
Another win would be a huge boost for the Filipino hitters as pool leaders in Group A and B are set to earn an outright spot for next year’s world championship in Japan.
Meanwhile, host Australia dismantled New Zealand, 29-2, to take an early lead in Pool A.
