The Philippine National Police (PNP) has reported one fatality from a stray bullet and at least 10 cases of indiscriminate firing over the past 10 days, including the arrest of four officers who discharged their firearms during holiday celebrations.
PNP spokesperson Police Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuaño confirmed that the lone fatality occurred on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, around 1 a.m. in Tondo, Manila.
He said the suspect has already been identified but remains at large, with a hot pursuit operation currently ongoing.
Of the 10 indiscriminate firing incidents, seven suspects have been arrested while three remain at large.
The four police officers arrested were identified as a Master Sergeant assigned in Caraga (Region 13), a Senior Master Sergeant in Western Visayas (Region 6), and two officers from the PNP Maritime Group.
All four have been placed under police custody and will face charges for indiscriminate discharge of firearms under Republic Act 11926.
The PNP has urged the public to cooperate with authorities and strictly observe safety guidelines to ensure a peaceful and injury-free New Year celebration.
Earlier, Police Major Gen. Nartatez also called on local government units to establish designated firecracker zones to enhance public safety amid the rising use of firecrackers during the holiday season. (Martin Sadongdong)
