Six people were seriously injured following an explosion caused by the mishandling of scrap materials at the corner of Tayuman and Dagupan Streets in Tondo, Manila, on Sunday afternoon, August 3, authorities reported.

According to police, the victims—including a minor and a senior citizen—were in the vicinity when a salvaged air conditioning compressor allegedly exploded.

Four victims remain in critical condition at Tondo General Hospital and Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center. One reportedly lost a hand due to the blast.

Manila Department of Social Welfare (MDSW) Director Jay Dela Fuente said the victims are receiving both medical and financial assistance.

Initial findings from the Manila Police District (MPD) Explosives and Ordnance Division (EOD/K9) suggest that the group may have attempted to dismantle or strike the pressurized compressor, unaware of the potential danger.

Authorities cited improper handling of hazardous scrap materials as the likely cause of the explosion. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Officials have urged the public to exercise extreme caution when handling or collecting industrial scrap materials, particularly those that may still contain pressurized contents. (Diann Calucin)
