Manny Pacquiao is taking a break from his preparations for his upcoming comeback fight against Mario Barrios to attend his formal induction to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York on Monday, June 9 (Manila time).
The Filipino boxing legend was already at the IBHOF headquarters and attended the Banquet of Champions on Sunday, June 8 alongside his wife Jinkee and Hall of Fame coach Freddie Roach at the Turning Stone Resort Casino Events Center.
The 46-year-old Pacquiao also got reunited with former opponent and long-time foe Erik Morales and joined by other boxing greats and Hall of Famers Felix “Tito” Trinidad and Roy Jones Jr.
In his speech, Pacquiao reflected on his illustrious boxing career that has long been considered worthy to be part of the Hall of Fame.
“I cannot imagine a boy selling newspapers in the streets, sleeping in the streets, I cannot imagine that I’d be here to speak with you and be one of the awardees of the Hall of Fame,” said Pacquiao recalling his humble beginning.
“I feel so excited for tomorrow. Tomorrow is the induction, so I’m excited for that. I’m honored with this award that I received. I believe that this is the fruits of my labor, hard work and discipline. My journey is still continuing. I’m excited that I’m continuing in my career and giving inspiration to the boxing world,” he added.
Pacquiao will join the rest of the 2025 Hall of Fame Class in the Parade of Champions where inductees will drive through downtown Canastota before the formal program at the same venue.
With his induction, Pacquiao is now the fourth Filipino and third boxer in the Hall of Fame, joining Gabriel “Flash” Elorde who was enshrined in 1993, Pancho Villa in 1994, and promoter Lope Sarreal Sr. in 2005.
“What I have done in boxing put the Philippines on the map of the world – it’s an honor and it’s my legacy,” said Pacquiao. “I hope my countrymen, the Filipino people, are also proud of it. I hope that in their hearts, they treasure those achievements and blessings from God.”
