Manila authorities issued a strong reminder against the use of illegal fireworks after a 12-year-old boy was killed and his friend severely injured when a “big triangle” firecracker they had picked up exploded in Tondo on Sunday night, Dec. 28.

Police said the boy died instantly, while his companion, also 12, was rushed to a hospital for treatment.

The incident occurred at the corner of A. Lorenzo Street and Abad Santos Avenue, where the two children reportedly picked up and ignited the firework.

Footage from a nearby closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera captured the explosion.

The Manila Department of Social Welfare (MDSW) pledged financial assistance for the burial of the deceased child and support for the recovery of the injured minor.

Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso stressed that illegal firecrackers are strictly prohibited, calling them dangerous to life and property.

He urged the public to refrain from buying and using illegal firecrackers to prevent untoward incidents that may cause bodily harm or damage to property.

The mayor also called on police and barangay officials to cooperate and strictly enforce the law.

He assured residents that all six district hospitals—Ospital ng Maynila, Ospital ng Sampaloc, Ospital ng Tondo, Gat Andres Bonifacio Medical Center, Sta. Ana Hospital, and Justice Abad Santos General Hospital—are on high alert and prepared to respond to firecracker-related injuries and other emergencies during the New Year festivities.

“As we welcome 2026, all our hospitals are on high alert to ensure fast and efficient medical services,” Domagoso said.

The Manila Police District (MPD) reported that more than ₱500,000 worth of illegal firecrackers had already been confiscated as of Monday, Dec. 29.

Authorities continue to emphasize vigilance and discipline to ensure a safe, peaceful, and orderly celebration of the New Year. (Diann Calucin and Patrick Garcia)
