The PBA Season 50 Philippine Cup quarterfinals match between Converge and Barangay Ginebra will feature two of the best point guards of the league.
The idea of going up against FiberXers rookie Juan Gomez de Liaño for a chance to enter the semifinals is a challenging thought for Gin Kings star Scottie Thompson.
It is, however, a challenge he’s excited to explore.
“He plays like a vet and he makes his teammates better. ‘Yon talaga ‘yong maganda sa kaniya,” Thompson said after their 108-105 squeaker over Titan Ultra at Araneta Coliseum on Sunday.
“I’m excited to go up against him. He’s like a ‘Point God,’ he fits well in the system he’s in [now] pero I think, wherever you put him, he can fit right in easily. Gano’n siya.”
In their first clash in the eliminations, Gomez de Liaño’s FiberXers got the better of Thompson’s Gin Kings, 106-96.
In that game, the rookie out of the University of the Philippines recorded 32 points, six rebounds and six assists. Thompson, meanwhile, registered 10 markers, eight dimes and six boards in the defeat.
The latest installment of their showdown has more on the line, though, as they face off in the Philippine Cup quarterfinals. The FiberXers have the twice-to-beat advantage over the Gins despite both holding an identical 7-4 card.
