Police forces in Metro Manila will be placed on the highest security alert as part of preparations for the three-day protest action by the Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) at Rizal Park in Manila, set to begin on Nov. 16.
Police Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuaño, spokesperson of the Philippine National Police (PNP), said the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) has initially committed around 10,000 policemen to secure the rally. However, the deployment may be adjusted depending on developments on the ground.
He said a meeting was scheduled on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 5, between officials of the Manila Police District, the Manila City government and the management of the Rizal Park.
“There will be perimeter support from the Manila City government and at least 14 ambulances will be deployed,” said Tuaño.
The rally was supposed to be held at the People Power Monument in Quezon City but the request, through a letter dated Oct. 30, was approved at the Rizal Park from Nov. 16 to 18.
Around 300,000 are expected to attend the rally, according to the police, citing intelligence reports.
Tuaño said the past protest actions will be used as background in mapping out a security plan for the three-day protest action.
“Initially, the NCRPO committed 9,800 plus policemen to secure the rally. In times of protest like this, the NCRPO declares full alert status,” said Tuaño.
“While this is a religious rally that we expect to be peaceful, our preparation will be complete which includes deployment of ambulances in cases of medical emergencies,” he added.
The PNP is also receiving reports that there will be other religious groups that will attend the rally. (Aaron Recuenco)
