Reigning champion University of the Philippines bucked a slow start and handed National University its first loss via a come-from-behind 66-59 win in the UAAP Season 88 men’s basketball tournament at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion in Manila Saturday, Oct. 4.
The Fighting Maroons overcame a lethargic showing in the first half before leaning on their defensive brilliance to hold the fierce Bulldogs to just 19 points in the last two quarters to complete their comeback.
Fresh off a 92-75 win over University of the East last weekend, UP seemed to have found its flow as it improved its record to 2-2 in its title defense bid. NU, meanwhile, sustained its first defeat for a 3-1 card, the mark of host University of Santo Tomas in the standings.
The State U banked on its balanced attack with Francis Nnoruka spearheading the assault with 14 points on top of six rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Gani Stevens added 10 points.
Miguel Yniguez and Harold Alarcon contributed eight points apiece as well as decent outputs on other departments, while Noy Remogat had six points, four rebounds, three assists, and one steal.
Steve Nash Enriquez posted 16 points, two rebounds, four assists, and two steals, while Jello Santiago and Jake Figueroa chipped in 10 and nine points, respectively. Omar John had a quiet four points.
Though both squads struggled offensively, NU managed to create ample separation that put them ahead all throughout the first half thanks to their masterful defensive display.
However, things went the other way for the Bulldogs, particularly their offense, scoring only just nine points in the third which apparently the Maroons took advantage of despite the latter also having measly shooting.
Nnorouka and Stevens then ignited their run before Reyland Torres hit a jump shot to give UP a 65-53 lead which denied the Bulldogs’ final salvo in the waning minutes.
