Filipino boxing icon and former senator Manny Pacquiao paid a courtesy visit to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at Malacañan Palace on Thursday, Aug. 28, where he presented his World Boxing Council (WBC) belt and gifted him with a pair of gloves.

During the visit, Pacquiao also sought Marcos’ support for the upcoming 50th anniversary celebration of the iconic “Thrilla in Manila” bout between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier.

Pacquiao, widely known as the “People’s champ,” said the President was enthusiastic about the event and pledged full support, including coordination with various government agencies.

“Natuwa naman si Presidente and all out support naman siya,” Pacquiao shared in an interview.

He added that Marcos was “very interested” in the concept of commemorating the historic 1975 fight, which remains one of the most legendary moments in boxing history.

The boxing icon also said that the President is “very interested” in the concept of Thrilla in Manila 50th anniversary.

The President also reminisced about his personal encounter with Muhammad Ali, recalling how the boxing great invited him into the ring during a training session and demonstrated his punches.

“Yung experience niya kay Muhammad Ali nung nanood siya nung training ni Muhammad Ali. Pinaakyat siya sa ring tapos dinemo sa kanya ‘yung mga punches na gagawin ni Muhammad Ali. Natuwa siya at di niya nakalimutan,” Pacquiao noted.
