Junior tennis continues to surge in popularity as a strong field of 230 players sets out for the Rep. Eric Olivarez Cup Juniors Age-Group Championships, which begin Thursday, March 19, at the Olivarez Sports Center and Parañaque tennis courts.

Showcasing both top-ranked standouts and promising young talents from Metro Manila and nearby provinces, the five-day, Philta- and UTR-sanctioned tournament features full 32-player draws across all eight age-group categories, highlighting the sport’s growing reach and participation at the grassroots level.

The sustained rise of junior tennis has been driven not only by inspiring figures like Alex Eala but also by consistent grassroots development efforts led by Palawan Pawnshop.

Under the leadership of president/CEO Bobby Castro, the organization continues to expand opportunities for young athletes through an extensive nationwide circuit that includes both junior and Open competitions.

The junior circuit recently concluded a successful five-leg Mindanao swing, with tournaments held in Gen. Santos City, Sultan Kudarat, Cotabato, Digos City and Tagum City.

Castro emphasized the program’s long-term vision, saying the initiative goes beyond competition by helping shape the future of young athletes. He noted that the circuit aims to develop talent while instilling values such as discipline, perseverance and sportsmanship – qualities essential both on and off the court.

Competition begins with matches in the boys’ 16- and 18-under and girls’ 12- and 16-under divisions, with games split between two venues to accommodate the large field.

Antonio Ng Jr., Gavin Kraut, Marwin Plata, and Felizardo Lota III headline the boys’ 18-and-U division of the tournament held in honor of Rep, Eric Olivarez, while Antonio Bengzon, Cristiano Calingasan, Kenji Kue, and John Enzo Masage are among the top contenders in the 16-and-U class.

In the girls’ side, Gabrielle Co, Ellythia Comia, Thea Soriano, and Margaret Abacan lead the 12-and-U category. The 16-and-U bracket features Astrid Cablitas, Izabelle Camcam, Chiara Bate, and Ava Banson in what is expected to be a highly competitive field.

Camcam also joins the 18-and-U division alongside Claire Casiller, Dania Bulanadi, and Mikaela Ngu. Meanwhile, Lilith Rufino, Teresinha Calingasan, Sofia Aguilera, and Carolina Fandino banner the 14-and-U group.

Doubles competitions will also be contested in the boys’ and girls’ 14- and 18-and-U divisions.

Following the Olivarez leg, the circuit moves to Olongapo before heading to Dumaguete.
Or, more appropriately perhaps, how will they stand their ground against the assault of arguably the greatest that ever set foot on the PBA floors?

Lastly, with San Miguel Beer having won the first conference, the Philippine Cup, the Beermen now find themselves in place to capture the second jewel of the Triple Crown.

The bullseye on their backs has never been bigger though, with the rest of the league – most notably a vengeful TNT squad that was denied a Grand Slam in the inverted 2024–25 season – eager to turn the Commissioner’s Cup into a graveyard of champions and strike an early blow against SMB’s ambition of securing a second Grand Slam after its historic 1989 feat.

The drama shifts to high gear from here as other major characters come into play, all aching to get their share of the spotlight. A full pack theater audience seems assured.
