CEBU CITY–A handful of athletes from Ormoc City are seeing action in the ongoing 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand.

The local government of Ormoc said the participation of 19 athletes from the city is a testament of the effectiveness of its sports program.

The Support to Athletes in Pursuit of Accomplishing Total Life-Changing Opportunities in Sports (S.A.P.A.T.O.S.) Program, strongly supported by Leyte 4th District Rep. Richard Gomez and Ormoc Mayor Lucy Torres Gomez, has helped the city become a hub for athletic excellence.

The program, through strategic investments, forward-looking programs, and a solid athletic framework, has produced champion athletes both in national and internationals.

Ormocanons competing in the ongoing SEA Games are Alexa Larrazabal, Juliana Marie Beatriz Torres Gomez, and Ivy Claire Dinoy in fencing’s Women’s Épée category.

Congressman Gomez himself is seeing action in Compak Shooting along with Carlo Baltonado, and Jed Rivilla.

Competing in Modern Pentathlon are Michael Ver Comaling, Joseph Anthony Godbout, Samuel German, Melvin Sacay, Eliza Maureen Ecalla, Princess Honey Arbilon, Juliana Shane Sevilla, Shyra Mae Arranzado, Kyle Aldrich Vilos, Sheska Rose Dejaño, Kydie Ashriel Guinto, and Jessly Roman.

Another Ormocanon, Robert Bolick, is part of Gilas Pilipinas, which is set to defend its 5×5 men’s basketball title. (Calvin D. Cordova)
