Nearly nine million people were affected and 259 lives were lost in the wake of two powerful typhoons that ravaged parts of the Visayas and Luzon, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC) reported Thursday, Nov. 13.
Typhoon “Tino” claimed 232 lives, mostly in Cebu and the Negros Island Region, while super typhoon “Uwan” left 27 dead, primarily in the Cordillera Administrative Region.
In a situational report, the NDRRMC said “Uwan” affected 1,332,223 families or 4,678,142 individuals in 11,661 barangays in 16 regions while “Tino” affected a total of 1,224,877 families or 4,263,991 individuals in 7,918 barangays in nine regions.
Of the affected population, a total of 669,725 families or 2,311,340 individuals were displaced but the latest NDRRMC reports revealed a decline in the displaced families- from 955,105 individuals from 263,019 families.
The combined cost of damage to agriculture and infrastructure was placed at P1.4 billion—P818 million for Uwan and P640.9 million for Tino.
The NDRRMC report also revealed that a total of 339,244 houses were damaged — 253,455 for Tino and 85,789 for Uwan.
Meanwhile, the Office of Civil Defense said a total of 125 people are still in the missing list while 523 people were injured for both the typhoons. (Martin Sadongdong)
