University of the Philippines unleashed a third-quarter storm to dismantle University of the East, 81-67, and snap an eight-game skid in the UAAP Season 88 women’s basketball tournament at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion in Manila Saturday, Nov. 8.
Not satisfied with a 12-point halftime lead, the Fighting Maroons opened the third quarter with a 27-16 flurry to hike their lead to 72-49 spread that proved too much for the Lady Warriors to overcome.
The victory ended State U’s seven straight losses – a drought that spoiled its good 2-0 start – to hold a 3-8 win-loss record, while UE absorbed its 11th consecutive defeat in as many contests.
Camille Nolasco stood out for UP after collecting 16 points, four rebounds, three assists, and one steal, while Achrissa Maw posted a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds with one assist and one block.
Also providing offensively for the Maroons were Louna Ozar and Alex Mendoza who both scored 10 points, while Kaye Pesquera and Rhea Solitario both finished with nine apiece.
Syvil Oñate led UE anew with 24 points, while Rachel Lacayanga produced 14 points which all went for naught.
Meanwhile in the 16U games, Moussa Diakite impressed with a rare triple-double to pace National University Nazareth School over Adamson, 83-71, to become the first team to punch a semifinal ticket this season.
Diakite posted a superb statline of 18 points, 14 rebounds, and 10 blocks – the sixth overall feat achieved by a player since the division’s inauguration in Season 86.
Diakite also three assists to help NUNS stay perfect at 11-0 and enter its third straight semis appearance.
Apart from Diakite’s splendid output, Nick Peña also dazzled with 21 points, while Dean Tria and David Sabareza combined for 21 points for NUNS.
Fran Flores led the San Marcelino-based squad with 13 points, while Kieff Iledan finished with a double-double effort of 11 points and 10 rebounds with three assists and three steals in a losing cause.
Earlier, reigning champion University of the East annihilated UP Integrated School, 76-29, for its third straight win.
The Junior Red Warriors hiked their record to 7-4, bolstering their semis bid.
Sean Felizmenia topscored with 12 points, while Goodluck Okebata and Zion Aguilar chipped in 11 points, and nine points, respectively, for UE.
