University of Santo Tomas flexed its might and crushed University of the Philippines, 75-61, to complete a first-round sweep in the UAAP Season 88 women’s basketball tournament at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City Wednesday, Oct. 22.
Fueled to complete their redemption bid this year, the Golden Tigresses stepped on the pedal early and built a commanding 52-37 lead in the third quarter to nail their seventh straight win.
Brig Santos stood out from both sides with a game-high 26 points with one rebound, two assists, and six steals, while Rachelle Ambos added 10.
“It’s a big win for us, especially as we are now heading into the next round and we hope it continues,” said Santos.
“Salute to UP which gave us a good fight, but we need to be more consistent on our games,” added UST head coach Haydee Ong. “We cannot play for just two or three quarters and not perform on other quarters.”
Camille Nolasco paced UP with 16 points with while Alex Mendoza and Yel Vingno combined for 22 points in a losing cause.
UP finished the round with a 2-5 record.
Meanwhile, reigning champ National University stamped its class and annihilated University of the East, 83-54, for its fifth consecutive win.
The Lady Bulldogs started hot and never looked back as they even padded their lead to 78-45.
