Magnitude 6.0 quake shakes Surigao del Norte

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Surigao del Norte at around 7:03 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 17, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). The tremor was initially recorded at magnitude 6.2 but was later downgraded.

Phivolcs said the epicenter was located 22 kilometers southeast of General Luna, Surigao del Norte, at a shallow depth of 28 kilometers.

The quake was felt at Intensity V (strong) in Basilisa, Cagdianao, Dinagat, and San Jose in Dinagat Islands, and in Claver, Surigao del Norte.

Intensity IV (moderately strong) shaking was felt in Anahawan, Hinunangan, Hinundayan, Liloan, Pintuyan, Saint Bernard, San Francisco, San Juan, San Ricardo, and Silago in Southern Leyte; Butuan City in Agusan del Norte; Libjo and Tubajon in Dinagat Islands; and Surigao City in Surigao del Norte.

Intensity III (weak) tremor was experienced in Abuyog, Dulag, Palo, and Tacloban City in Leyte, and in Nasipit, Agusan del Norte, while Intensity II (slightly felt) was felt in Alangalang, Babatngon, and Burauen in Leyte; Malaybalay City, Bukidnon; Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental; and Laak, Maco, Monkayo, and New Bataan in Davao de Oro.

Instrumental intensities were recorded at Intensity IV in Hinunangan, Hinundayan, San Francisco, and Silago in Southern Leyte; Cabadbaran City and Butuan City in Agusan del Norte; and Surigao City in Surigao del Norte. Intensity III was recorded in Abuyog, Alangalang, Dulag, and Hilongos in Leyte; Intensity II in San Juan, Southern Leyte; and Intensity I in Burauen, Leyte; Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental; and Davao City, Davao del Sur.
