Iran head coach Roberto Piazza commended Alas Pilipinas for its valiant performance following the team’s near-upset in the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship.

The Iranians advanced to the Round of 16 with a pulsating 21-25, 25-21, 17-25, 25-23, 22-20 victory over the Filipino spikers that was highlighted by a crucial video challenge that altered the course of the match.

“Philippines played an amazing game. They deserved to be in the Round of 16 just like us because two points cannot change the game,” said Piazza.

“I’m happy because we are in the Round of 16, but I’m not happy about how we played the game,” he added.

Piazza said his stalwarts appeared jittery, as evident in their erratic first set where they fumbled with nine of the team’s 35 errors.

“We were afraid to play and the Philippines were like, perfect on the court,” he said.

He also praised fellow Italian coach Angiolino Frigoni, whose mentorship was reflected in the inspired performance of the Filipino spikers.

“I need to congratulate my colleague, Angiolino. He did an amazing job in helping his players improve a lot,” Piazza said.

Piazza would also not be surprised if the Nationals would achieve greater heights in the future.

“If you are able to learn from Angiolino… all the movements, I think you can improve a lot,” he said.

The Iran Volleyball Federation also lauded the efforts of the Filipino spikers, thanking them for a great game.

“Thank you, Philippines! Incredible heart from Alas Pilipinas. As Asia’s lone team left in the Round of 16, we’d be honored to have your support for Team Iran. Salamat po and Mabuhay!” the federation wrote on social media.
