Nerissa Meneses, wife of coach Sherwin Meneses, clarified on Wednesday, Sept. 3, that her husband’s contract as chief tactician of National University Lady Bulldogs has already lapsed and that alone was the reason why he left the team — nothing else.
Debunking a published report, Nerissa also stressed that Sherwin had no issues with NU management and they parted ways amicably.
“Just to set the record straight — He only signed a one-year contract with NU, which has now concluded,” Nerissa wrote.
“There is no issue or conflict with the NU management—he holds the institution and its leadership in the highest regard,” she added.
With Meneses’ exit, Regine Diego, also a former PVL coach, is being considered to handle the team. She represented NU during Shakey’s Super League (SSL) Preseason Unity Cup press conference earlier in the day.
Manila Bulletin-Tempo has been trying to reach out Diego and Meneses for confirmation as of posting time but to no avail.
If plans push through, Diego could be the fifth coach of the team the past 8 years that saw the Lady Bulldogs win 3 titles.
Earlier this year, Sherwin made his debut as a lead mentor for NU and marked his return to UAAP since his first stint with his alma mater Adamson almost a decade ago.
After replacing Norman Miguel, Meneses transformed the already formidable Lady Bulldogs – with former stars Bella Belen and Alyssa Solomon leading the way – en route to a 12-2 win-loss run in the eliminations.
The twice-to-beat holder NU managed to survive the feisty Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws in five sets of their semifinal duel before sweeping the La Salle Lady Spikers in the UAAP Season 88 finale.
