Not as agile and strong as they were years ago, Letran old-timers still proved to possess the heart and resolve of champions as they beat the San Beda Red Lions, 89-79, in the sudden death to reign supreme in the Pinoyliga Alumni Cup Season 5 at the Enderun College Gym over the weekend.
After being outclassed in the opening of their best-of-three series, 90-70, Letran still forced a deciding Game 3 with a 79-76 thriller in Game 2.
Aside from reigniting their rivalry, players from both sides had to deal with tight schedule since they have their own responsibilities with their families.
“Despite our busy schedules during weekends, we always make time and effort to play and represent our beloved alma mater to achieve our goal,” said Letran alumni team captain Dwight Manuel.
“We played as a team every game, dedication and perseverance are the key ingredients for our Pinoy Liga Alumni Cup success,” he added.
It worked, as the Knights cruised past their rivals to claim the No. 1 seed in the eliminations en route to the semifinal round where they toppled the Perpetual Altas, 71-68.
“Of course we’re very happy and proud, especially now that we’ve made history. Hard work paid off despite different challenges we had every game,” Manuel continued.
“But the bond of brotherhood played a big role to each player characterized by loyalty, support, and mutual respect for Deus Patria Letran. Arriba!”
The squad was managed by Kaizer John Galvez and composed of former players and alumni in Manuel, Roberto Valdes, Boom Labrusca, Bryan Faundo, Chad Alonzo, Jonathan Piñera, Boyet Bautista, Ronjay Enrile, Kojak Melegrito, Eric Rodriguez, Amie Sy, Regin Ranises, and Jaypee Belencion, who was named as Finals MVP.
Also part of the squad are Erwin Cruz, Ryan Velasco, Jun Alegre, Mark Edralin, Mark Anthony Andaya, Michael Yraola, Renz Rivota, Mark Cruz and Willie Miller under the tutelage of Harold Sta. Cruz.
“We used to participate in Pinoy Liga tournaments every season but through the kind assistance of our sponsors and friends, we’re able to assemble a much competitive yet fun roster at the likes of these former high school and collegiate players,” he concluded.
