University of the Philippines is sure to have another star in the making following its acquisition of former San Beda top gunner James Payosong.

The transfer of one-time NCAA Finals MVP was announced by UP Thursday, March 6.

The 6-foot-2 Payosing, who helped the Red Lions win the NCAA Season 99 crown, is a big addition to the Diliman-based squad.

Multi-champion coach Goldwin Monteverd stressed his excitement on Payosing’s arrival as several stars of the team have already completed their playing years.

“Si James yung isa sa mga magme-make sure na magko-continue lang yung laban natin even ‘pag tapos na yung mga champions natin ngayon,” said Monteverde. “ We are very excited to have him.”

In UP, the pride of Bislig City, Surigao del Sur will have a two-year eligibility and a one-year residency, meaning he is expecting to suit up as a Maroon in Season 89.

The Maroons are out to defend the crown they won at the expense of the La Salle Archers last season.

In his last year of duty with the Red Lions, he normed listed 7.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.5 assists per contest.

A season prior, Payosing alongside Jacob Cortez, who now plays for De La Salle University, spearheaded the Red Lions to their 23rd overall and 1st championship in four years, beating the Mapua Cardinals in three games.

He was named as Finals MVP after averaging 9.6 points and 12 rebounds in three-game series.
