LAS PIÑAS CITY – University of Perpetual Help System Dalta (UPHSD) Chairman Dr./BGEN Antonio Tamayo has named Michael Cariño as the interim coach of the school’s men’s volleyball team ahead of the opening of the NCAA Volleyball Championships.

He replaced mentor and multi-titled coach Sinfronio ‘Sammy’ Acaylar who died last Jan. 30 due to cardiac arrest.

Tamayo is convinced Cariño has what it takes to become a champion coach like Acaylar.

The job is nothing new to Cariño being Acaylar’s assistant for 15 years.

“It’s an honor to be a successor of coach Sammy and of course, we will do our very best to continue the legacy and me as the men’s team coach of this season,” Cariño said.

Cariño vowed to extend the school’s winning tradition.

The Altas are seeking a fifth straight championship and 15th overall.

Acaylar would have turned 66 on Tuesday, Feb. 4.
