Teen dead, 2 minors hurt in road crash

BACOLOD CITY – A teenager died while two others were injured in a road accident on Araneta Street in Barangay Tangub here Friday.

Killed in the accident was Francis Batac, 14, of the said village, while police withheld the names of the two wounded minors.

Capt. Jun Ray Batadlan, head of Police Station 8, said the accident happened when a 17-year-old boy asked Batac and their 13-year-old friend to go with him on a ride on New Year’s Day.

Batadlan said the 17-year-old boy drove his employer’s pick-up truck when the latter fell asleep after having a drinking session with him. He was working as a helper at his employer’s residence.

Batadlan said the elder teenager was allegedly speeding when the vehicle crashed into the center island and overturned, injuring the three of them.

“They were on their way home after roaming the streets past 1 a.m. pero nakainom sila eh,” the police station commander added. Batadlan said it took a while for rescuers to rescue Batac from the vehicle after he got stuck.

The trio were brought to a hospital, where Batac was declared dead.

The two other minors sustained fractures and are still confined at a hospital here. Batadlan said families involved in the accident have yet to talk. (Glazyl Masculino)
