There is no proof yet that those who have recovered from coronavirus disease (COVID-19) are protected from contracting a second infection, the Department of Health (DoH) said.

“Ayon sa WHO (World Health Organization), wala pang strong evidence na nagsasabing people who have recovered from COVID-19 and have antibodies are protected from a second infection,” said DoH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire.

Vergeire said that “despite continuous efforts” by the global scientific community to study the virus that causes COVID- 19, “there is still a lot to be discovered about the disease.”

The Health official was reacting from a GMA News repo r t that a neonatal pediatrician named Dr. Karen Abat-Senen who had recovered from COVID-19 has tested positive anew. Senen is currently being treated at the Philippine General Hospital.

“The WHO continues to review the evidence on antibody responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection,” said Vergeire.

“Pinag-aaralan din po kung gaano nga ba kalakas ang relationship ng pagkakaroon ng antibodies at clinical improvement,” she added.
