Singer-actress Sharon Cuneta-Pangilinan sparked laughter during a performance in Intramuros after making a lighthearted political remark about President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s 2022 election running mate.
Speaking onstage before the President and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, Cuneta teased him by pointing to her husband, Sen. Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, as her own vice president.
“I am happy to be here, Sir. And Sir, I have only one vice president—there—my date tonight,” she said, gesturing toward Pangilinan during the gala “An Evening with the Stars: A Gala Celebrating the Stars Who Continue to Light Our Way” on Thursday, Feb. 12.
“Mali your choice, no?” she added, drawing laughter from the audience.
Cuneta quickly shifted back to the program, quipping, “Okay, okay. Let’s move on.”
Her remark came amid political tensions between Marcos and Vice President Sara Duterte, his former UniTeam running mate during the 2022 national elections.
Marcos and Duterte defeated the tandem of former vice president Leni Robredo and Pangilinan in 2022, although Cuneta had publicly supported the latter pair.
Cuneta later expressed support for the President, saying she would continue to pray for him and for the country.
“Basta, Mr. President, you have my support. I will pray for you, I will pray for the country,” she said.
“I will pray that before we all judge you, that you’re allowed to do your job for all of us,” she added.
The Mega Star also wished the President well amid the spread of misinformation.
“We pray for your good health, peace of mind from all the fake news, all the disinformation. May God be with you every single day, Mr. President,” Cuneta said.
