National University unleashed its fury right from the get-go and romped to an 89-64 win over Far Eastern University to kick start its retention bid in the UAAP Season 88 women’s basketball tournament in grand style on Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum

Out to strike fear in the hearts of their rivals, the Lady Bulldogs came out smoking, rattling the Lady Tamaraws with an array of baskets coupled by their suffocating defense to make an early separation before practically sealing the win late in the third.

Kristine Cayabyab spearheaded NU’s assault with 24 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the field while Marga Villanueva added 13 points. Karl Ann Pingol and Angel Surada combined for 23 points in a show of force.

The Season 85 Finals MVP also garnered nine rebounds, four assists, three steals and one block to give new coach Da Olan a winning start. Olan was the team’s longtime deputy before being tasked to become the team’s head coach following the departure of Aris Dimaunahan,

NU used its size advantage to score 38 points from the paint.

Shemaiah Abatayo and Yvette Villanueva paced FEU in scoring with 15 points apiece, while Amyah Espanol contributed 12 points in a losing cause.
