The Senate will convene as an impeachment court on June 3 to issue summons and other orders related to the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
In a letter to House Speaker Martin Romualdez, Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero said the Senate will receive the House of Representatives’ panel of prosecutors at 4 p.m. on June 2, 2025.
Congress is scheduled to resume regular sessions on June 2, after the May 2025 elections. The 19th Congress will adjourn sessions on June 14.
“Pursuant to Rule 1 of the Rules of Procedure on Impeachment Trials, we would like to inform your good office that, having taken proper order on the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte, the Senate shall be ready to receive the House of Representatives’ panel of prosecutors at 4 o’clock in the afternoon of June 2, 2025,” Escudero said in his letter to the House leader, dated May 19, 2025.
“As stated in our letter dated February 24, 2025, the Senate shall expect the prosecution to read the seven charges under the Articles of Impeachment in open session,” he said.
“Thereafter, the Senate shall be convened as an impeachment court at 9 o’clock in the morning of June 3, 2025 for the purpose of issuing the summons and such other relevant orders,” the Senate leader said.
A copy of the letter has been furnished to the Vice President’s office and was received on the same date.
Last February, the House of Representatives accused Vice President Sara Duterte of betrayal of public trust, and culpable violations of the Constitution.
The House also accused her of committing high crimes for plotting to murder or assassinate the incumbent President, the First Lady and the House Speaker.
The House also impeached Duterte for betrayal of public trust and graft and corruption over her alleged misuse and malversation of funds of the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education (DepEd) which she previously headed.
Duterte was also accused of bribery, acts of destabilization, conspiracy, murder, accumulating unexplained wealth and failure to disclose all her properties and interests in properties in her statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN). (Hannah Torregoza)
