Most Filipinos feel proud whenever the country performs well at international sports competition, a Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey results released on Thursday showed.
In the survey conducted from September 27 to 30, 1,800 respondents were asked, “Gaano ninyo ipinagmamalaki ang Pilipinas tuwing nagwawagi sa pang-internasyonal na isports o laro?
SWS found 79 percent of Filipinos who feel “very proud” and 17 percent are “somewhat proud” when the Philippines does well at international sports competitions.
Only 3 percent do not feel proud, while 2 percent are “not very proud” and 1 percent “not proud at all.”
The Philippines has just finished atop the final standings in the 30th Southeast Asian Games that wrapped up last Wednesday.
About 84 percent in Metro Manila are very proud of the country’s achievements in sports, followed by the rest of Luzon (81 percent), Visayas (77 percent), and Mindanao (72 percent).
Meanwhile, 81 percent of Filipino males are very proud of the country’s achievements in international sports, slightly higher than the 76 percent among females.
By age group, pride in the country’s achievements in sports is higher among older adults than those 18-24. Sixty-eight percent of the youth aged 18-24 are very proud of the country’s achievements in sports.
By comparison, most older adults aged 25 and above are very proud of the country’s achievements in sports – 78 percent among the 25-34, 80 percent among the 35-44, 85 percent among the 45-54, and 77 percent among the 55 and above.
In the September survey, SWS also found more Filipinos who feel proud when the country does well in international sports than when the question was asked in 2008.
Those who feel very proud increased by five points, from 74 percent in 2008 to 79 percent in 2019. (Ellalyn De Vera-Ruiz)
