A gradual shift in the prevailing wind pattern will likely commence next week, which could signal the onset of rainy season in the country.

According to Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration Weather Division chief Esperanza Cayanan, the prevailing wind will gradually shift from southeasterly to southwesterly by June 11 or 12.

The normal onset of wet or rainy season associated with the prevalence of the southwest monsoon or “habagat” in the country is between the second half of May and first half of June.

Cayanan said the shift in wind pattern next week will be manifested by early morning or afternoon rain showers and thunderstorms over the western section of Luzon, including Metro Manila.

Meanwhile, the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies aside from afternoon rain showers or thunderstorms.

Winds will be moderate and coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to occasionally rough.

Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate from the south to southwest with slight to moderate seas.

PAGASA does not see the formation or entry of a tropical cyclone inside the country during the celebration of Independence Day on June 12. (Lai Ruiz)
