SAN JOSE, CAMARINES SUR — Police Staff Sergeant Nilo M. Miraña nearly lost his life after being attacked by a bolo‑wielding man believed to be in a mental health crisis during a confrontation in Barangay Calalahan on Aug. 22.
Miraña, who led the responding team from the San Jose Municipal Police Station, tried to calm the suspect when the situation suddenly turned violent.
The man charged at him, causing Miraña to fall, before striking him with a jungle bolo.
The attack inflicted severe injuries to his face and left hand, which was severed during the assault.
His fellow officers immediately intervened, firing at the suspect’s legs to stop the threat and prevent further harm. Both Miraña and the suspect were rushed to Partido District Hospital and later transferred to the Bicol Medical Center.
Doctors performed a complicated surgery to reattach Miraña’s left hand, with the Philippine National Police (PNP) committing full medical support and assistance.
He is now under close observation following the procedure.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. commended Miraña’s courage and restraint, stressing that his actions exemplified professionalism in the face of danger.
On Monday, Miraña was awarded the Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting for his gallantry and dedication to duty.
