A motorcycle rider attempting to evade arrest for traffic violations was nearly beaten by a mob who mistook him for a robber in Tondo, Manila, on Wednesday, August 27.

The rider was initially flagged down by officers from the Department of Transportation–Special Action and Intelligence Committee for Transportation (DOTr-SAICT) during a routine inspection along N. Zamora Street.

He was spotted riding without a helmet and wearing slippers, both violations of traffic regulations.

Instead of complying, the rider attempted to flee from a Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) personnel, losing control of his motorcycle and nearly colliding with a crew cab belonging to a TV network covering the operation.

He then abandoned the vehicle and escaped on foot, prompting authorities to chase him.

The pursuit ended nearly a kilometer on Juan Luna Street, where local residents apprehended the rider. Mistaking him for a robber, the mob almost assaulted him before authorities intervened.

Further investigation revealed that the rider lacked a valid driver’s license and the motorcycle’s registration had expired. (Patrick Garcia)
