A massive fire struck the Parola Compound in Tondo, Manila, early Friday morning, March 6, leaving 349 families homeless spanning Gates 9, 10, 11, and 12.

The Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) reported that the blaze began at 1:18 a.m. and escalated rapidly, reaching the fourth alarm by 1:59 a.m. Firefighters declared the fire out at 5:46 a.m.

Officials noted that the flames spread quickly as most houses were made of light materials.

Barangay 20 officials estimated damages at ₱800,000. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Arson investigators are probing the cause, with reports suggesting the fire may have been deliberately set.

The Manila city government, through its Department of Social Welfare (MDSW), immediately mobilized assistance.

MDSW Director Jay Dela Fuente confirmed that evacuees are being sheltered at the Delpan Covered Court, where modular tents have been set up.

Hot meals and relief goods are being distributed while assessments of affected families continue.

“Sa kasalukuyan ay nagpapatuloy ang assessment at validation ng mga apektadong pamilya, gayundin ang pamamahagi ng hot meals upang matiyak na may agarang pagkain ang mga evacuees habang sila ay nasa evacuation area,” Dela Fuente said.

The Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau (MTPB) reported severe congestion on roads leading to Road 10 due to the incident. (Patrick Garcia)
