A massive fire tore through the densely populated Maisan area at the corner of Cabildo and Anda Streets in Intramuros, Manila, on Wednesday, Feb. 25, leaving two people dead, displacing around 600 families, and causing an estimated ₱1.5 million in damages.

Authorities said the blaze, which raged for more than six hours and destroyed at least 300 houses, was allegedly started by an ex-convict identified only as alias Burnok.

Police reports indicate that the suspect, recently released from detention, flew into a jealous rage after discovering his wife with another man. He allegedly carried gasoline from his father’s truck, doused his fourth-floor home, and set it ablaze.

The fire quickly spread across tightly packed homes made of light materials, sending thick plumes of smoke into the Manila skyline.

Residents scrambled to escape, clutching children, pets, and vital belongings as burning debris rained down. Many work as stall owners and vendors at nearby talipapas, while others are students and employees, including those from Manila High School.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) raised the alarm to the fourth level within half an hour of the fire’s outbreak, dispatching additional units to battle the inferno.

Firefighters, who struggled with limited water supply and narrow access roads, finally declared the blaze out at 11:30 p.m.

Two fatalities were confirmed, though authorities have yet to release their identities pending notification of their families.

Enraged neighbors reportedly attacked the suspect before police intervened and took him into custody.

By nightfall, displaced families sought shelter at the Delpan Sports Complex, while San Agustin Church set up tents to provide hot meals and emergency aid.

Barangay 655 Chairman Johny Yacub said relief operations and damage assessments remain ongoing as authorities investigate the cause and assist displaced residents. (Diann Calucin)
