Kayla Sanchez claims 8th SEAG medal; men’s football to bronze medal match

BANGKOK — The Philippine swimming team put a strong end to its campaign in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games, claiming two more silver medals while the men’s football team was relegated to the bronze medal match in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games on Monday, Dec. 15 here.

Sanchez claimed her eighth medal in the biennial meet, this time, a silver in the 4×100-meter medley. She was joined by Miranda Renner, Xiandi Chua and Heather White to finish behind Singapore with a time of 4:09.33.

Earlier, Renner also bagged a silver medal in the women’s 50m butterfly.

In snooker, the tandem of Basil Hassan Al-Shajjar and Michael Angelo Mengorio also settled for a silver medal after a 1-4 defeat to a Malaysian pair.

Meanwhile, nabbing a bronze medal was Kristel Macrohon, who delivered the second mint for the PH weightlifting team. She had a total lift of 221kgs.

Apart from the four gold medals, the Philippine shooting also won a silver with Evelyn Woods finishing second in the practical shooting production individual. Stephanie Lee, Aeron John Lanuza and Gerard Loy all delivered bronzes in their respective categories.

Over at the Rajamangal Stadium, the men’s football team suffered a heartbreaking 2-0 loss to Vietnam in the semis.

Lee Van Thuan slammed the door on the Filipinos’ gold medal hopes with an 88th minute header followed by a free kick from Nguyen Thanh Nhan. Still, the Filipinos can still gun for a bronze on Thursday at the same venue.

The Alas Pilipinas women’s team, on the other hand, fell short of landing at the podium after a tough 26-28,25-13,28-30,24-26 loss to Indonesia in the battle for bronze.
