The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Friday, Oct. 24, vowed to protect the Constitution and warned that calls for military intervention in political affairs could lead to destabilization, economic damage, and a loss of international credibility.
AFP Chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. issued the statement amid mounting appeals from some groups urging the military to “take action” over alleged corruption in infrastructure projects, particularly those under the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
“Poprotektahan po natin ang ating bayan, ang Constitution, at ang duly constituted authorities,” Brawner said in a DZRH radio interview, emphasizing the AFP’s commitment to democratic institutions and the chain of command.
He cautioned that if the military were to intervene—as seen during EDSA 1 and EDSA Dos—the country could face one of three outcomes: a coup d’état, a withdrawal of support from the President, or a military junta.
“Kapag nangyari any of these three ay hindi maganda para sa ating bayan dahil maaapektuhan ang ating ekonomiya at ang ating international standing. Wala pong magpapautang sa atin at ipi-freeze ang assets,” he added.
Brawner also confirmed that the Philippine National Police (PNP) is studying possible charges against retired generals and other individuals who have been urging the military to withdraw support from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Addressing concerns about supposed restiveness within the ranks, Brawner clarified that the AFP remains “solid and professional.”
“Okay naman po ang Armed Forces. We remain solid, we remain disciplined, we remain professional. Naiintindihan ko po ang damdamin ng ating mga sundalo at mga officers dahil ako mismo ay galit rin sa corruption,” he said.
“Nananawagan ako sa ating mga kababayan na huwag idamay ang Armed Forces sa politika. Please shield the AFP from the political environment,” he added.
Brawner said the AFP continues to monitor the situation closely and maintains open communication with troops through information drives and regular camp visits to strengthen morale and discipline. (Martin Sadongdong)
