A third-year college student fell victim to a violent snatching incident at the Lawton underpass on his way home to Quezon City—but swift action by authorities led to the arrest of the suspect, who had posed as a beggar asking for spare change.

The suspect, later identified as Bryan Capillos, alias “Tanda Bakla,” was presented to the media at Manila City Hall by Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso.

According to reports, the victim, Mark Vincent, was walking through the underpass when Capillos approached him under the guise of begging for alms.

Moments later, Capillos snatched Vincent’s iPhone 16 and necklace before fleeing the scene.

A video of the aftermath showed the student in tears, visibly shaken and distraught.

The footage quickly went viral, sparking outrage from netizens who expressed sympathy for the victim and frustration over recurring safety issues in public spaces like underpasses.

Recovered from the suspect were the stolen items, both of which are set to be returned to the victim.

Mayor Domagoso assured the public that efforts are being doubled to improve safety in pedestrian areas, especially those with a history of similar incidents.

“We do our best for the peace and order,” he said during the media presentation.

The Manila Police District urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious behavior, particularly in crowded or poorly lit areas.

Capillos is currently detained and facing charges of theft, with possible additional charges. (Diann Calucin)
