The Philippine National Police (PNP) has withdrawn five personnel assigned as security detail to Ako Bicol party-list Representative Zaldy Co, who is currently facing allegations related to a flood control project controversy.
PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuaño explained that the recall was prompted by Co’s departure from the country, reportedly to seek medical treatment, amid an ongoing investigation.
Several witnesses have accused the lawmaker of receiving multi-billion peso kickbacks from flood control funds.
“This was done because the standard operating procedure (SOP) is that police security protection officers are recalled whenever their VIP is abroad,” Tuaño said.
Under PNP regulations, only the Police Security and Protection Group (PSPG) is authorized to provide protective security to individuals with verified threats to their lives. Applicants must first undergo a formal threat assessment before being granted security detail.
Co was initially reported to be in the United States for medical reasons, but recent information indicates he has since traveled to Spain.
In response, House Speaker Bojie Dy has revoked Co’s travel authority and ordered him to return to the Philippines.
