More than 1,500 World War II-era bombs and ammunition were recovered by police from a mountain excavation site in Barangay San Roque, Antipolo City, on Monday, Aug. 25.
Authorities were alerted after a backhoe operator conducting excavation work in Alta Vista accidentally unearthed a cache of unexploded ordnance (UXO).
The Antipolo City Police dispatched Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams to the site, where they found over 1,500 pieces of unused explosive materials, including 224 pieces of Japanese Type 89 Knee Mortar 50 MM shell and 1284 pieces of .30-caliber ammunition.
The recovered UXOs were safely transported to a makeshift storage area for proper disposition. (Patrick Garcia)
