LEGAZPI CITY, Albay — The Department of Health (DOH) in the Bicol Region has issued a public advisory against Paragonimiasis, commonly known as lung fluke disease, urging residents to refrain from consuming raw or undercooked crabs, crayfish, and shellfish.
During a press conference on Monday, DOH-Bicol medical officer Dr. Xavier Vallejo described Paragonimiasis as a neglected tropical disease that is frequently misdiagnosed as tuberculosis due to its similar respiratory symptoms.
Paragonimiasis is caused by a parasitic flatworm that usually infects the lungs but may spread to the skin, brain, and other organs if left untreated.
The parasite is primarily transmitted through the consumption of raw or undercooked crabs and crayfish carrying its larvae.
Eating raw or marinated shellfish also poses a significant risk.
“People often confuse it with TB, which delays proper treatment. Early diagnosis is crucial,” Vallejo stressed.
Data from the TB-Paragonimiasis Program revealed that of 36 patients tested across the region in July , 27 were confirmed positive for the disease.
Health officials strongly advised the public to avoid consuming raw freshwater crustaceans and seek immediate medical consultation if they experience persistent cough, chest pain, or other related symptoms. (Niño Luces)
