Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero retained his post as Senate President as the 20th Congress opened on Monday, July 28, securing 19 votes in his favor—well ahead of Senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto III’s five.
Escudero was reelected just before President Marcos’ fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA).
His nomination was led by Senator Joel Villanueva and backed by Senators Sherwin Gatchalian, Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa, and Raffy Tulfo.
“I join his cause, and I believe, Senator Chiz can bring out the very best in the Senate this 20th Congress,” Villanueva said.
Sotto’s bid was endorsed by Senators Juan Miguel Zubiri and Loren Legarda.
This marks Escudero’s second term since replacing Zubiri in May 2024. His continued leadership comes amid rising political tensions, particularly surrounding the impending impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
Escudero stressed the Senate would act “within its rules and responsibilities.”
Senator Jinggoy Estrada was reelected Senate President Pro Tempore. Villanueva was chosen Majority Leader, while Zubiri nominated Sotto as Minority Leader. (Dhel Nazario)
