Athletes from the newly formed Pilipinas Climbing Inc. (PCI) are determined to make their mark internationally as they prepare for a series of major competitions in the coming months in an effort to elevate the profile of sport climbing in the Philippines.
Among the upcoming events is the ASEAN Climbing Championship scheduled on July 4 to 5 in Malaysia where PCI is sending a 25-member delegation for the tournament. This serves as a crucial tune-up ahead of the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand this December.
The team departs on Thursday, July 3.
“We’re looking forward to competing, not just showing up, but bringing home medals,” said PCI President Atty. Al Agra during the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum on Tuesday, July 1.
Leading the Philippine contingent are climbers Yca Dizon and John Veloria, who expressed confidence in both in the team and the long-term potential of the sport in the local scene.
“The ASEAN Climbing Championship will simulate the SEA Games, so it’s a great start for us,” said Veloria. “We can assess our capabilities, make adjustments, and work toward being 100 percent ready for the SEA Games.”
“Training now isn’t just for myself anymore,” added Dizon. “It’s for something bigger. The SEA Games will be a benchmark for how we grow and prepare for bigger competitions.”
Before the SEA Games, the team is also expected to participate in another international competition in Singapore to further sharpen their skills.
“We can be world-class in this sport,” said PCI Chairman Franz Lim, who was joined by PCI auditor Ina Pahati and coach Miel Pahati at the forum.
Agra also emphasized the inclusivity of the sport.
“We want to promote climbing for everyone, including Para athletes. The challenge is sustainability, which is why we’re hoping the Philippine Olympic Committee accepts us as members, and that the PSC can eventually support us with funding,” he said, noting that there are currently 20 climbing gyms across the country.
