Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin C. Remulla said on Monday, June 30, that he intends to apply for the position to be vacated on July 27 by Ombudsman Samuel R. Martires.
Remulla said he will submit his application to the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) on Friday, July 4.
“I think I will have a lot to offer there,” he told journalists.
The JBC had earlier announced the opening for application and recommendation to the post of Ombudsman.
It said that online applications and recommendations can be submitted to the JBC Online Registration and Application System (JBC O.R.A.S.) through its judicial platform www.portal.judiciary.gov.ph until 4:30 p.m. on July 4.
The JBC is a constitutional office that accepts, screens, and nominates appointments in the judiciary; the Office of the Ombudsman (OMB) and its deputies and special prosecutor; and members of the Legal Education
Remulla said he has conveyed his interest for the Ombudsman post to President Marcos.
“I told a mutual contact that I was very interested,” he noted.
If ever he gets appointed as Ombudsman, Remulla said he has a person in mind to recommend as DOJ secretary. He declined to mention his or her name.
“I think we are solidly organized here (DOJ) and it can stand on its own if the succession is okay,” he also said.
The OMB was created in 1989 under Republic Act No. 6770.
Under RA 6770, among the OMB’s functions are “to investigate and prosecute on its own or on complaint by any person, any act or omission of any public officer or employee, office or agency, when such act or omission appears to be illegal, unjust, improper or inefficient.” (Jeffrey Damicog)
