John Lat erupted for a career-high 15 points as University of Perpetual Help moved closer to winning the NCAA Season 100 Juniors Indoor Volleyball Championship at the FioOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City on Friday, May 30, 2025.

With the power-hitting Lat at the forefront of the team’s bristling assault, the Junior Altas won the opening of their best-of-three title series, 25-21, 29-278, 28-26, before another thrilled crowd.

The boys of coach Sandy Rieta will go for the clincher on Tuesday.

Of Lat’s total points, 10 of them were attack points and 5 from blocks. He was ably supported by Zyro Ornos (13 pts.) and Nathan Ciriaco (12 pts.)

Not fortunate were the Junior Lady Altas who absorbed a 26-28, 18-25, 25-22, 19-25 beating at the hands of the Arellano University Baby Chiefs.

Arellano’s Samantha Maranan scored a game-high 33 points for the Legarda-based school. She got huge help from Catherine Chu (28 pts.) and Jasmine Gelaga (13 pts.)

Game 2 is set on Sunday, June 1, with the Junior Lady Altas out to force a decider.

Perpetual was led by Sherrie Rose Acosta with a career-high 29 points, including 4 blocks.

Maya Javier and Ashlee Buenaventura combined only for 23 points.

“We will do our best to even the series,” said Rieta.
