University of the Philippines skipper Nica Celis is up for the next phase of her volleyball career as she is set to join next month’s Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Rookie Draft.

Celis, 23, announced her plan to take part in the draft day slated June 7, with hopes of doing good just like former UP stars, including Tots Carlos, Isa Molde, Justine Dorog, and Lorie Bernardo.

“The best lesson I learned throughout my years in UP is tibayan ang utak at puso. My stay has been very challenging, but you really have to find the good in everything and make everything work out,” said Celis.

“Before coming to UP, pangarap ko lang naman talaga mag-UAAP, and alam ko, I have to really work hard to get there,” she added.

The 5-foot-10 middle blocker played a big role in UP’s fifth-place finish this Season 87 after the team finished with a 6-8 record.

They highlighted their campaign with big wins over Far Eastern University, De La Salle, and eventual champion National University.

The State U had actually a promising 2-0 start, enough to better its showing last season – thanks to the gallant efforts of Celis, Joan Monares, Nina Ytang, Irah Jaboneta, and rookies Jaz Manguilimotan, and Kianne Olango leading the way.

UP is hoping to contend next season after former UE star Casiey Dongallo completed her one-year residence and is now eligible to play for the Fighting Maroons.

“I know it won’t be easy pagdating as a pro, but because I love what I do, I’m sure kaya ko rin i-conquer yung challenges doon,” said Celis, a Fighting Maroon since 2019.

Other collegiate stars who are expecting to join the rookie draft are Bella Belen, Erin Pangilinan, and Alleiah Malaluan.
