Regal Film’s “Untold” is among more well-written films we have seen in recent years.
Masked as a horror-thriller, it is actually a satirical look on ambition, deceit, greed, focusing on mass media.
Not that the jump scares were scarce – there’re lots of them.
But the more disturbing aspect of the film is its barbed attack on society’s ever-growing numbness, to the point where shock value is nothing more than just a means to an end.
That it is told in a matter-of-fact manner, only adds to the disturbing absurdity of it all.
Talk about a huge slap in the face.
The story follows Jodi Sta. Maria’ star journalist Vivian Vera who is being pressured to come up with new material meant to stir audiences anew.
She was able to pull it off numerous times prior but it seems that she has lost her touch.
Adding to her woes are the unending nightmares and cataleptic moments that seem to blur her sense of reality.
Eager to rise up the ranks, junior journalist Louise, played by Kaori Oinuma, starts investigating. She wants the truth, and she wants it bad.
But what is the truth? And is she actually ready for it?
What about Vivian?
What is causing those nightmares?
We will not spoil it for you but suffice it to say, “Untold” is an amusing, gripping ride that will make you stop and think.
Well, at least, for a brief moment until, of course, you go back and get preoccupied again with social media.
Also starring Gloria Diaz, Mylene Dizon, Joem Bascon, Juan Karlos Labajo, Lianne Valentin, and Sarah Edwards, “Untold” is now in cinemas.
