Nine prisoners were killed while seven other were injured when the “Sputnik” and “Commando” gangs clashed inside the maximum security compound of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City early Friday morning, the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said.

Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra immediately ordered BuCor chief Dir. Gen. Gerald Bantag to investigate the riot and submit the report to him as soon as possible.

The Southern Police District (SPD) said that it has received information from BuCor spokesman Gabriel Chaclag that nine persons died when the riot broke out between the Sputnik and Commando gangs.

Chaclag said that of the nine fatalities, six belonged to Sputnik, two were Commando members, and another one was from unidentified group.

He said the victim sustained wounds from bladed weapons and blunt instruments

He said the riot took place at around 2:30 a.m. Friday and was pacified at around 4 a.m.

Chaclag said that the BuCor is still trying to determine the reason for the fight.

Following the riot, Chaclag said the casualties were taken to the NBP Hospital.

“Wala naman nadala sa ibang hospital,” Chaclag said.
