Magnitude 5.5-earthquake shakes Mindoro

EPICENTER of the magnitude 5.5 Mindoro earthquakeA moderately strong earthquake that measured magnitude-5.5 on the Richter scale rocked Mindoro Island on yesterday morning.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology recorded the earthquake around 9:05 a.m., which originated 23 kilometers southwest of Rizal, Occidental Mindoro.

It was felt as a “strong” tremor at Intensity 5 in Rizal and San Jose, Occidental Mindoro; and Calapan, Oriental Mindoro.

It was “weak” at Intensity 3 in Lipa City, Batangas; Malay, Nabas and Ibajay, Aklan; Libertad, Antique; and Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro.

San Nicolas, Batangas; Tagaytay City; Malinao, Aklan; Sebaste and Culasi, Antique; Calatagan, Batangas; and Manila  felt the tremor as a “slight” shaking at Intensity 2.

It was “scarcely perceptible” at Intensity 1 in Talisay, Batangas; Dolores and Mauban, Quezon; San Jose, Antique.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic in origin, which was caused by ground shaking primarily due to the sudden movement in the Earth’s plates. (Ellalyn Ruiz)
